Rush

Black sheep, dry branch, middle child,
un-natural wreckage. she knew all things

came in two's: waiting and absence,
wall and chair, bridle and rein,

darkness and the man that brought it with him.

She remembered dark birds flying overhead,
night and rain, gallop of the quarterhorse,

hooves pounding, rushing desperately
to breach the pasture gait.
