Ribbons

Given as gift. Presented
to charm. Perhaps, to spoil
nature. Sweet remember-ing
of other nights. That never
quite fit into a cardboard box.

You've left the ribbons off.
It means something. Negligence
or fear of binding. Easily opened.
Easily destroyed. A safety valve.

For nothing. I would have stayed
with you. But you missed too much.
What you never had, became. A door,
a gate, a wall. A gift . Without ribbons.

Of Existence

A.
It's a strange possibility (I said)
that you misunderstood. I was
here before you. Here
being now. The four corners
of earth. My cedar box. Proof.

B.
You could not steer a boat
to the other side of a puddle.
With your sense of navigation.
I am surprised you remember
my name. Let alone. Where I
am going. It's just a theory.

C.
Some men equate love
with fire. Inconsistency.
Orange coals. In the morning,
nothing is left. But resentment
and ashes. Put your coat on
(I say) it is starting to snow.

D.
There is something beautiful
about stagnation. At the very
least. It is comforting. Even
nature stands still. On a calm day.
Sadly. Waiting for a storm.

E.
When I think. Some words
to say. About heaven. About
breathing in and out everyday.
About making. Circles in the sand.
With a small stick. An SOS. A cry.
For help.

F.
The circumference of meaning.
Memorizing translations. Collecting
dust. Looking through my notes.
Torn and wrinkled (I wrote)
"The moment of kiss that lingers
but a second more than necessary,
would be proof enough. Of your existence".

Artifacts of God (work in progress)

1.
Where does one find a better explaination
for gravity? The dead meet the living
with slow, deliberate precision- a bird
landing on a broken bough.

2.
What is the criteria for constancy?
an eye in the light, space between the wing,
a beautiful object giving into
weight- a loyal downward movement.

3.
There are certain things
we agreed upon. Clear angles
of leaves. Shapes rarely found
in nature. A place to press your ear.
A small keyhole in the wide chest of a tree.

4.
I begin to think. What is freedom?
The radiance of compassion.
Proof of sacrifice. Brutal stupidity
when it is cruel. Each piece
meaningful. Artifacts of God.

5.
A straight line requires
control. The dead meet
the living. The machine limits
itself to obedience. To gravity.

A Beautiful Night

It could not be saved. Nor
would I try. Though faith is rare;
more perfectly supressed. Finally,
years of trusting silence.

A new mechanism diverts us.
Simplicity. A treaty. A piece of bread.
Spilled blood. An empty flask.
Forfeiture.

There is harm to be had
in flowers if you gather them
complete. Tiger's teeth
in the jaw of roses.
Misleading.

I will remain traditional
and slight. Nameless. Faceless.
Mystic and transparent.
With any luck at all, I will
remain...

a small beautiful night.

Once the Bones of Man

There is nothing new
today. Even the rooster
has mounted this sunrise
before. Uninspired
he crows. Dust
he stirs and scratches,
once the bones of men.

Floats down, again.

Weary of the short
and certain flight. Its

mysteries corrupted.
